Rugby Trail by Rail (1-2-3)

14 days

Day 1: Arrive into Tokyo on September 21st, 2019

Arrive into Tokyo on your scheduled flight. If you can choose which airport, we recommend you to fly in and out of Haneda. It's closer! But Narita tends to have more international arrivals/departures so most likely you will be coming in to Narita. Also, if you are finding it difficult to get flights to arrive on the 21st, we can arrange pre-tour accommodation nights in Tokyo, depending on your arrival date.

You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel in Tokyo. Free time to relax and wash away any jet lag that may be there.

Day 2/3: Match Day & Tokyo

Enjoy a buffet style breakfast at your hotel.

Match transfers arranged directly to & from your hotel. Details to follow.

★★Ireland v Scotland★★

Yokohama Stadium

@ 16:45 Kick Off

Join our Post-Match Party at a local izakaya (casual / local style dining) for an All-You-Can Eat & Drink for 2 hours!

Day 4: Healing Hakone

There is no  better cure after three hard days and nights in Tokyo, than to escape to a rural ryokan. Hakone is a convenient hide away more famous for its view of Mt Fuji and the lovely Lake Ashi. You will be provided with the Hakone Free Pass, given instructions how to get to where we recommend, and away you go!

Onsen (hot springs) and kaiseki dinner will be a real treat and highlight of your trip (apart from the rugby)! Definitely not to be missed.

Day 5/6/7: Kyoto, Nara & Hiroshima

Using your Japan Rail Pass, you will take your first seat on the shinkansen (bullet train). What an experience! Watch out for the cabin staff bowing to you while they enter and leave your carriage. So polite, so clean, and so comfortable!

Three nights in the ancient capital and culturally rich Kyoto. Join one of our Kyoto city day tours which you can chose from later. An important cultural activity we like to share in Kyoto is a traditional Tea Ceremony. You will be booked into our local Tea House and have the very rare chance to sit & chat with a real Kyoto Geisha. This is one of our unique local insights, only available in Kyoto.

On your free day in Kyoto you can chose to head west on the bullet train to Hiroshima & Miyajima Island (day trip is possible).  Or if you prefer to stay closer to home, visit the First Capital and Unesco World Heritage Todaiji Temple in Nara. Nara is home to the largest bronzed statue and biggest wooden buildings in the world. Very impressive!

Don't worry about deciding this yet. Your rail pass will get you to either destination at no extra charge so you can decide when you are in Japan.

Day 8: Match Day, Shizuoka

After three mesmerizing days in Kyoto, it's time now again for our favourite game of the series. Imagine, a stadium filled with Japanese supporters & semi-filled with Irish rugby fanatics.....electric!

Make your way to Hamamatsu station using your Japan Rail pass. All Unique Japan Rugby Tour clients will be given a pass to hop on our match shuttle service, operating to/from Hamamatsu station. Although the stadium is not too far, it still requires a car/coach (approx. 20-30 minutes).

Over the next three nights you will venture up towards the Japanese Alps area. Matsumoto will be your first stop. Very famous for its magnificent samurai castle, one of the only original castles still standing in Japan (many of them have been burnt, rebuilt and modernised).

After one night in this castle town you will take a mountain bus across the valley through the stunning scenic road to Takayama. Spend two nights in Takayama, a merchant town filled with old world charm and atmosphere.

Day 12/13/14: Kobe

Using your rail pass, ride the high speed bullet trains and express mountain trains down to the port city of Kobe, host city for Ireland's 3rd pool game.
